The entire village of Fr. Vincent De-Paul always faced the big challenge of lack of access to clean water. Fr. Vincent grew up fetching water by head from the swampy well. This swampy well is located down the hill and very far from the homesteads.
This always posed a big challenge to the elderly and children. In African society, it’s only women and children who fetch water from long and isolated places that exposes them to danger of any kind. The same water source from the swampy well was always contaminated since all the animals drunk from it. This always exposed danger of waterborne diseases to many or even death to young children.
Fr. DePaul looked at the sad situation and thought of introducing rainwater collection by using a water tank constructed near the house. But this didn’t attend the increasing demand from the village population, which would leave the rainy water tank empty in few days. This still forced Fr. to seek an efficient solution to deal with the problem and that’s how the drilled water well system was introduced. With this system, water is being pumped by both solar and electricity to the reservoir tank which is then distributed to taps in the village.
The same project was also introduced to the catholic institutions of Nyabuhikye where water was a big challenge. Most of the times the students would leave study work to walk kilometers to fetch water for school use especially to prepare meals and shower. This project has changed lives of all people in the area.
